The first person who wrote a Gothic novel was the writer Horace Walpole. He published The Castle of Otranto the 1764, that was the main step to the horror stories and films we know now, but then it significated the starting of anew writing style: the Gothic.
There are some elements that are synonimum of the Gothic novel and we should know:
- Women threatened by a powerful, impulsive, tyrannical male
- Supernatural or otherwise inexplicable events
- The metonymy of gloom and horror
- The vocabulary of the gothic
- Omens, portents, visions
